Rice / United States & Canada
MARKET GUIDE · NORTH AMERICAPakistani Rice for US and Canadian Importers
What a US or Canadian importer needs to know before buying IRRI-6 or 1121 rice from Karachi: the duty, the FDA filings and what we can and cannot ship, each checked against the official source.
What US duty does rice from Pakistan pay?
Milled rice enters under HTS 1006.30. Most of what we ship, IRRI-6 long grain and 1121 extra long, falls under 1006.30.90 (basmati is statistical suffix .59, other long grain .61), which carries a specific duty of 1.4 cents per kilogram. Parboiled rice, 1006.30.10, is 11.2%.
Since 24 July 2026, products of Pakistan also carry a 10% Section 301 duty (HTS 9903.05.62), added on top of the normal rate. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether any exemption applies to your entry.

What FDA rules apply to the shipment?
- Food Facility Registration. The mill and packing facility must hold a current FDA registration. Registrations are renewed every two years between 1 October and 31 December; FDA treats any facility that has not renewed by 31 December 2026 as expired. Ask any supplier for its registration before you contract.
- Prior Notice. For rice arriving by sea, Prior Notice of Imported Food must reach FDA no less than 8 hours before the vessel arrives at the US port.
- FSVP. Under the Foreign Supplier Verification Program, the US importer (the US owner or consignee) carries out risk-based verification of the foreign supplier. We supply the specifications, inspection reports and certificates that verification needs.
- Import alerts. On 2 November 2026 no FDA import alert named rice from Pakistan in its title. General alerts on pesticides, heavy metals and mycotoxins can apply to any food, which is why we ship with independent SGS inspection.
Canada
Milled rice (1006.30) enters Canada free of duty under both the MFN and GPT columns. The Canadian importer needs a Safe Food for Canadians licence from CFIA to import food.
