Packaging Is a Specification, Not an Afterthought

Buyers sometimes treat packaging as a logistics detail to settle after the commodity, price and volume are agreed. In practice, packaging format affects retail presentation, shelf life, customs handling and even which Incoterm makes sense for a given order. Confirming packaging alongside the commodity specification, rather than after it, avoids a shipment that meets every quality specification but does not fit the buyer's actual retail or distribution model.

Rice: PP Woven Bags

Rice is packed in PP (polypropylene) woven bags as the international standard, in 25kg or 50kg formats. The choice between the two usually reflects the destination market's retail and handling norms — 25kg bags suit markets with more manual retail handling and smaller household purchase sizes, while 50kg bags are more common in bulk institutional and wholesale trade. Bag specification should also confirm whether an inner liner is required for additional moisture protection during long sea transit.

Chilled Meat: Vacuum-Packed vs MAP-Packed

Vacuum packaging removes air from around the product, extending shelf life for bulk export and longer transit times — Prelude's vacuum-packed chilled beef is suited to buyers who will repack or process the product further at destination. MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) replaces the air inside the pack with a specific gas mixture calibrated to preserve colour and texture, and is generally preferred for retail-ready product that will go directly onto a supermarket shelf without further repacking. The right choice depends entirely on what happens to the product after it clears customs — bulk buyers and retail-ready buyers should specify differently.
